Location: Haste Street (one block off Telegraph Ave), Berkeley, CA 94704
Description: “In the sixties and seventies People’s Park served as a gathering place for activists in the counterculture revolution, creating enough of a commotion that then governor Ronald “No Jumper” Reagan sent in troops, resulting in the death of one Berkeley student. Two decades later, in 1993, amidst much outcry from activists, the city bulldozed the park and installed a sand volleyball court and the basketball court
Despite the renovations, the flavor of the park remains, as evidenced by a wall mural that depicts sixties history and benches adorned with slogans such as “Be Free” and “Truth Is a Virus to Power.” The crowd reflects the Berkeley lifestyle as well; dreadlocked Rastafarians play alongside burned-out hippies, ponytailed wannabe-hippies, Asian students, intellectual coffee-shop guys, and scruffy dudes with goatees.
In addition to the diverse assortment of players, you’ll often find an interesting mix of spectators on the park lawn watching the game and exercising their right to peaceful assembly. Included in the human omelette are the homeless, students, fans, and tourists.” – Hoops Nation: A Guide to America’s Best Pickup Basketball
