Category: Rebounding
Skill Level: Youth, Middle School, High School+
Required: 1 Basketball, At least 6 players and a coach
Instructions:

Break the team up into 3 lines.

One line starts at the top of the key and the other two lines at the right and left wings respectively. The first person in each line is on defense and they should be facing the second person in line who is on offense.

The drill starts when the coach with the ball shoots the ball and misses on purpose. When the shot goes up, the defensive players turn and box out their man and then go for the rebound. The offensive players go after the ball the as well.

If a defensive player gets the rebound, they turn and pivot and throw an outlet pass to a coach. The drill continues with the offensive players going to defense and the next players in line going onto offense.

If an offensive player gets the rebound, they try and go up score on the defense. The drill repeats itself with the same players until the defensive players can get a rebound.

Variations

  • Feel free to give punishment to the defensive players who don’t get a rebound (pushups, sprints, etc.).
  • Feel free to have the players move around simulating an offensive possession before taking the missed shot.

Expert Quotes

“I feel all great teams have two things in common: defense and rebounding. So, we stress defense and rebounding every day as the most important aspects in the game to win.”

- Larry Brown

Keys to the Drill
  • The purpose of the drill is to get your players to work on their rebounding skills.
  • They should concentrate on boxing out and getting aggressive in going after the ball for a rebound.
  • Make sure the offensive players are going hard after the ball. This drill is just as much about defensive rebounding as offensive
  • Make sure the Coach misses the shot!
