Category: Rebounding
Skill Level: Middle School, High School+
Required: 1 Basketball, Coach or Teammate
Instructions:

This rebounding drill focuses on the rebounder going aggressive for the rebound and ingraining the “rebounding mentality” needed to be a great rebounder. Some of the best rebounders in the game, from Ben Wallace to Dale Davis, have done this drill with our expert, George Irvine, to improve their rebounding skills.

The coach/teammate is at the top of key with the basketball. The player starts at the free throw line facing the coach/teammate.

The drill starts when the coach/teammate throws the ball off of the backboard. The player turns and jumps as high as possible to grab the rebound. After getting the rebound, the player then pivots and throws an outlet pass to the coach.

The player then returns to their position at the free throw line and the drill starts over with the coach/teammate throwing the ball off the back board. The drill is repeated for a recommended 10 rebounds.

Expert Quotes

“The one thing I do that nobody else does is jump three or four times for one rebound.”

- Dennis Rodman

Keys to the Drill
  • The purpose of the drill is to get your players to work on their rebounding skills.
  • Backboard Rebounding is a great drill for big men for conditioning and getting them to go after rebounds aggressively.
  • Try to have the coach/teammate miss the shot high so the player has to jump as high as possible for the rebound
  • Concentrate on the pivot and outlet pass after the rebound as much as the rebound
