Skill Level: Youth, Middle School
Required: 1 Basketball, Team
Instructions:

Anytime you are running a drill for youth basketball players, you want the drill to be fun. You want the kids to enjoy being at practice and having a good time. However, at the same time, you want to ensure that the kids are learning the proper technique and improving their game.

For this particular drill, break your players into two lines and have them line up across from each other about 15 feet apart.

One of the two players across from each other should have a ball in their hands. When you blow the whistle, the player should pass the ball across to their teammate.

Because the ball is a “hot potato”, the player receiving the ball tries to pass the ball back to their teammate as quickly as possible. The player does not want the ball in their hands too long.

Expert Quotes

“People have always doubted whether I was good enough to play this game at this level. I thought I was, and I thought I could be. What other people thought was really always irrelevant to me.”

- Steve Nash

Keys to the Drill
  • Hot potato will teach the kids how to pass the ball quickly and accurately.
  • The two recommended passing techniques used should be chest pass and bounce pass.
  • Make sure that the players are passing the ball accurately and hitting the receiver in the chest. The receiver should be catching the ball in front of their chest with two hands.
