Monkey in the Middle

basketball hoop outdoors

Category: Passing
Skill Level: Youth, Middle School, High School+
Required: 1 Basketball, 3 players

Have players 1 and 2 stand approximately 15 feet apart depending on skill level.

The 3rd player should be between players 1 and 2 to play defense and players 1 and 2 are on the same team. Give the ball to player 1 and have player 3 play defense and guard player 1.

Player 1 should use ball fakes and steps through with the proper passing technique to make a pass to their teammate player 2. They can either use a bounce pass or a chest pass.

Once the pass is completed, the drill is repeated with player 2 now making a pass to player 1, and the drill continues in this fashion. All three rotate positions in order for everybody to have a chance at passing and defending.

“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.”

- Michael Jordan

Keys to the Drill
  • The object of the drill is to have the players pass the ball to one another with defensive pressure in their face.
  • The two recommended passing techniques used should be chest pass and bounce pass.
  • Make sure the defender is putting pressure on the ball to replicate a game situation. “Monkey” in the middle is a good drill for defense as well.
