Category: Shooting
Skill Level: Youth, Middle School, High School+
Required: 3 Basketballs, Full Team
Instructions:

Break into two different lines. One line starting at the free throw line and one line underneath the basket. Have the basketball start in the line underneath the basket.

The player with the ball passes to the player at the free throw line. The player receiving the pass is ready in triple threat position and catches the ball and rises up for the shot. At the same time, the passer sprints out to the shooter, closes out on the shooter and contests the shot.

After the shot is taken, the defender turns and boxes out the shooter and goes after the rebound. Both the offensive player and defensive player should go for the rebound.

Each player goes to the end of the opposite line and the drill continues on in this fashion with the next players that are up.

Variations

  • Depending on the skill level, you can move the shooting line to back to the 3-point line.
  • You can move the drill to either the right or left wings as well.

Expert Quotes

“Basketball is a game that gives you every chance to be great, and puts every pressure on you to prove that you haven’t got what it takes. It never takes away the chance, and it never eases up on the pressure.”

- Bob Sundvold

Keys to the Drill
Defender
  • Make sure they sprint out to the shooter on balance with a hand up to contest the shot.
  • When boxing out, make sure they make contact with the offensive player first before heading in for the rebound.
  • Make sure they are throwing a proper pass and hitting the shooter in the shooting pocket or shooting hand.

Shooter

  • Make sure they are ready to receive the pass with their legs bent and in triple threat position.
  • Remind them to follow through and use their legs when shooting. When in pressure situations, players tend to lose focus on strength in their legs and following through on their shot
