Category: Dribbling
Skill Level: Youth Middle School
Required: Mulitple Balls, Full Team
Instructions:

Divide the players into equal groups. Depending on the number of players you have, it will either be two groups or multiple. There should be at least 3 players in each line.

Line up each group on the baseline with one person at the front of each line holding the ball. On the whistle the first player from each groups dribbles up the court, touches the endline and comes back. When they get back they hand the ball off to the next person who repeats.

First team all the way through their group wins.

Variations

As the level of play increases, here are a few different variations or adjustments to throw in:

  • Player comes to a jump stop when approaching the next dribbler for the hand off.
  • Player comes to a jump stop at the free throw line extended and chest passes or bounce passes the ball to the next player
  • Use one hand (right) dribbling up the court and the other (left) coming back

Keys to the Drill
    • The purpose of this drill is to develop the ability to run fast while dribbling under control. It also creates a competitive environment
    • Be sure to maintain control of the dribbling. If the players are running with the ball, palming or carrying it, or throwing it too far out in front of them, be sure to correct or prevent in some way.
    • Coach stands at the end of the court and makes sure the players look at them while dribbling to keep their head up.
