Category: Shooting
Skill Level: Middle School, High School+
Required: 1 Basketball, Coach or Teammate (Optional)
Instructions:
This is an individual drill that can be done on your own, but it is best done with a coach or teammate rebounding for you.
Shooting from a specific distance, depending on skill level, shoot jump shots and keep track of your makes and misses. Start from zero, where each make is a +1, each miss is a -1. So if you make one and miss the next, you are still at zero. The goal is to get to +10 before you can stop.
Mike Miller, from the Minnesota Timberwolves, does this drill each day at the end of practice. He does it at the end of practice because he is tired, so it is consistent with his game fatigue. Miller sets his target at +50 and has to get there before he can leave the gym. Have a read about Miller making 36 straight threes to finish his workout.
Shooting muscles grow to know certain strengths and shooting hundreds of shots trains those muscles. But you have to shoot the shots correctly (ie. making them) to train them correctly. So, this drill combines a lot of shots with the pressure of making more shots than you miss.
