Category: Shooting
Skill Level: Middle School, High School+
Required: 3 Basketballs, Full Team
Instructions:

Have the players split into two equal lines. One line starts on the right wing with the balls and the other line starts on the left wing.

The first player in the line without the balls sprints across the court and catches a pass from the opposite line at the free throw line extended. The player sets their feet and shoots the ball, follows their shot and grabs the rebound.

After the rebound, he or she passes the ball to the next available player in the ball line. The passer then goes to the end of the shooting line.

The drill continues on in this fashion and change sides of the court at your discretion. A good time limit is 2 minutes on either side.

Variations

  • For more advanced players and teams, the shots can be taken at the top of the key, behind the 3 point line.
  • To create a competitive atmosphere and teamwork, make it into a game where the team has to reach a certain goal. For example, 40 made shots in 4 minutes (depending on the skill level and shot location).

Expert Quotes

“The two ingredients in success in basketball are playing hard and playing intelligently”

- Pete Carril

Keys to the Drill
  • The drill works on the footwork and shooting technique of coming off of a screen. Emphasize these points.

  • The drill can be just as much a passing drill as a shooting drill. Emphasize proper passing technique and make sure the passes are hitting the shooters in the shooting pocket.
