Category: Shooting
Skill Level: Middle School, High School+
Required: 1 Basketball, 2 Players (including yourself)
Instructions:

This is a two-person drill that can be done on a half court. Stick to a certain range of shooting, for instance 3 pointers only, or 15-foot jump shots only (depending on skill level). For this example, we will use three pointers.

One person begins by shooting a three pointer. The shooter chases their own rebound, while the next player runs to a point on the three point line. The original shooter, after chasing down their rebound, passes the ball to the next shooter. Then the passer, runs back to the three point line and becomes the shooter again. The action repeats, with each shooter chasing down their rebound and passing to the next shooter, until a certain amount of shots have been made or taken.

Repetitive shooting is key to being a good shooting team, but it must be done under some sort of pressure and hurried to become exhausted and imitate game-speed.

This drill along with Three-Man Shooting, Shooting Consistency and Team Princeton Shooting, have been run at Princeton practices for many years now starting under the direction of the great coach Pete Carril.

Keys to the Drill
  • Pressure can be created by using the counting system explained in Shooting Consistency (+1 for a make, -1 for a miss, must get to +10) or by using a clock to hit a target in a certain time. The clock is good because it also forces you to imitate game-speed.

  • Shooter

  • Move around to get practice from different locations and to get yourself tired. Don’t walk from one spot to the next–Run!

  • Rebounder/Passer

  • Lead the shooter in your passing. Set him up for the shot by putting the ball right into his shooting pocket. The drill is about shooting consistency, so the shooter should not have to be adjusting to different passes in different locations.
