Flip Saunders was let go by the Detroit Pistons for not bringing a NBA Championship to the motor city. According to ESPN.com, president of basketball operations, Joe Dumars believes that the whole team is liable and full responsibility lies with the players as much as the coach. He states, “I’m not going to sit here and make Flip the scapegoat, everybody is in play.”
The article continues to report that a source close to the Pistons says Michael Curry will be hired to replace Saunders. Michael Curry was Flip’s assistant coach this past year.
I respect the dedication of Dumars to bring an NBA championship to Detroit and do believe personnel changes should be made. However, I do not agree with the firing of Saunders for the hiring of somebody like Michael Curry. I have a hard time believing Michael Curry will do a better job than Flip Saunders . I mean Flip had a 71% winning percentage and took the Pistons to three straight Eastern Conference finals! I believe Dumars is making a mistake here, but, in retrospect, probably not as big of a mistake as passing on Carmelo Anthony for Darko Milicic.
