More from Day 1 at Double Pump Best of Summer

by Jaime on July 29, 2008

Last night, I decided to take in a game between a Puerto Rican team and a young Los Angeles team. It turns out, I wasn’t alone as I was sitting next to every major college coach on the west coast from Ben Howland to Lorenzo Romar. Two guys who stood out and look for them to be the top prospects in the county in the coming years were Jordin Mayes (2010) and Josiah Turner (2011).

Jordin Mayes PG-SG

Mayes is a player. He is a good shooter and has a good handle. I like his poise on both ends of the floor and he likes to compete. Mayes is a combo guard and not sure what position he will end up playing in college?  At PG, he needs to get quicker and at SG he needs to get bigger as he is only 170lbs and 6′2. Regardless, he is a fine prospect and will be one of the top recruits for the 2010 class.

Josiah Turner PG

I really like this kid and he is only going to be a sophmore next year! What really impressed me about Turner was his knack for defense. When he was in the game, he used his quickness to pressure the ball and really made it tough on the opposing players. On offense, he makes the game look easy and doesn’t force the issue. His mid-range jump shot is right on, but he needs to work on his 3-point shooting. He sees the floor well and sets up his teammates nicely. He is small at the listed height of 6′0, though I think he is shorter than that, but gets away with his lack of height with his speed and quickness. He is young and, if he keeps his maturity about him, he will be a stud one day on the collegiate level.

Puerto Rico Pump N Run had a couple of nice players and was impressed by the talent Puerto Rico is offering. One player of note was Jorge Bryant Diaz.

Jorge Bryant Diaz C

Listed at 6′11, he reminded me of an older Puerto Rican player in Daniel Santiago. Diaz has a nice feel around the basket and gets up and down the floor pretty good for a 6′11 guy. His biggest downfall is he is weak and not tough at all. He even makes these faces that really make him look like a wimp. I think he has a chance to be a solid college player, but he needs work. I hope he goes to a mid-level school to play and not a higher level conference. If he gets into a too good of a program, he will be lost in the mix and don’t think he will improve to the player that he could potentially be.

Other Players I watched:

Michael Snaer (Inland Reebok) PG

He needs to learn that the high-school 3-point line is not at the pro line but actually closer in. I think he took 5 threes in the game I watched and all  were behind the pro line. By the way, he only made one and I think that one was two steps in from the half-court line….Overall, he is a good scorer who is athletically gifted and strong. He needs to work on his mid-range game, but he will be a good college player wherever he ends up. Hopefully, his college coach doesn’t have the pro 3-point line painted on their court. Schools that are lookig at him are FSU, Stanford, Marquette and Missouri.

Kevin Young PF-C

An intriguing big man who is very athletic but also very skinny. He is not much of an inside player except on the break, and, surprisingly, he has a decent outside touch from beyond the 3-point line. I think he shades himself to the outside because of his lack of strength. Word is he is going to head to prep school at either New Hampton or Notre Dame prep (Kevin, go to New Hampton!). Prep school will do him well. Schools that are looking at him are BC, Oregon State, Missouri and Arkansas.

Did anyone see the Bay Area Hoosiers play? Especially yesterday? What did you think of Robby Rowland? I heard he had a good game?
