An article in FastCompany magazine this month highlights the innovation being put into the equipment technology for the Beijing Olympics. At the forefront of the article are the Nike Hyperdunk shoes, which will be worn by Yi Jianlian and supposedly Kobe Bryant.
The shoes Nike is building for most sports are supposed to be the lightest and strongest to date. This should be true for these new basketball shoes as well. The are some sort of supporting threads that are designed like a suspension bridge to increase support yet decrease the amount of material.
“When I tossed one up into the air, I wasn’t sure it was going to come back down,” quotes Kobe Bryant.
The new shoes will be available to the general public in August or September.
While I do not really like the design look so far, I am entirely in favor of quality over design. Having sturdy shoes with good support is very important for any player that is pushing the limits of its use. However, while these shoes are supposed to have great support and structure, their durability might come into question. Kobe may get a new pair every game, but that does not mean the general public can afford that. We shall see how well these can hold up when the youth around the nation put these to use in the Fall.
