The battle for the Sonics begins.
Being from Seattle, I am probably biased in my opinion on this issue, however I still think it is a tragedy if the city of Seattle loses the Sonics. I also think it is incredibly short-sighted by the NBA and David Stern to allow the move. As the NBA continues to expand internationally and as interest in Basketball and the NBA increases in Asia and elsewhere around the globe, it seems to me that having a team in Seattle makes more sense than Oklahoma City.
I had some friends attend this rally yesterday, (nice photo Tony and Brad). You can read more about the day-to-day details of the trial and other things on this local KJR Sonics blog.
Hopefully the Sonics will play in Seattle for the next two seasons, in which time they can find a new buyer that will keep the team in Seattle. Bennett and others often say that the city doesn’t care enough about their team and try and list polls from Seattle. My issue with this is that a large part of the Sonics support (and money) comes from close surrounding areas technically outside the “city of Seattle”.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out, because there are several issues at play on this one.
